Clocks Spring Forward This Weekend: What You Need to Know About Daylight Saving Time

This Sunday, March 9, at 2:00 a.m., clocks across most of Canada will move forward by one hour as daylight saving time (DST) begins.

The annual shift, often referred to as “springing forward,” means longer daylight hours in the evening but also results in the loss of an hour of sleep.

The time change can affect sleep patterns, daily routines, and even safety on the roads. Studies have shown an increase in drowsy driving incidents and workplace accidents in the days following the transition.

Experts advise people to prepare by adjusting sleep schedules slightly in advance.

Health and sleep specialists recommend:

  • Going to bed 15–30 minutes earlier for a few nights before the change.
  • Getting morning sunlight to help reset the body’s internal clock.
  • Avoiding caffeine and screen time close to bedtime.

In recent years, there has been ongoing debate over the future of daylight saving time. Some provinces and U.S. states have introduced legislation to make DST permanent, arguing that it improves economic activity and reduces energy consumption. However, sleep researchers often advocate for permanent standard time, citing health benefits.

For now, the annual adjustment remains in place.

Residents should set their clocks forward before going to bed on Saturday night and prepare for a slightly groggy start to the week.
