The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Brant County is cautioning local businesses following reports of counterfeit $100 bills being used in the area.
Authorities are urging retailers to be vigilant and to familiarize themselves with the security features of genuine banknotes to prevent financial losses.
According to the OPP, the counterfeit bills are designed to be convincing but lack key security elements present in authentic Canadian currency. Business owners and employees are encouraged to take extra precautions when handling cash transactions.
Police advise individuals to pay close attention to the texture of banknotes, as genuine bills have raised ink on the large denomination number and the portrait’s shoulders, whereas counterfeit notes may feel unnaturally smooth.
The transparent polymer window on real banknotes should include clear holographic elements, a feature often absent or poorly replicated on fakes.
Additionally, authentic bills display color changes in their holograms and metallic ink when tilted, and the security ribbon should contain small numbers matching the bill’s denomination that shift when viewed from different angles.
Serial numbers on counterfeit bills may be repeated or invalid, making it important to compare multiple bills if there is any suspicion.
Authorities are urging businesses to refuse suspected counterfeit bills and request an alternative form of payment.
If a fake bill is detected, it should not be returned to the person attempting to use it. Witnesses should take note of the suspect’s physical description, behavior, and any vehicle details before reporting the incident to the Brant OPP at 519-442-2242.

The OPP is emphasizing the importance of employee training in counterfeit detection to minimize financial losses and urges businesses to exercise caution when handling large-denomination bills.
Investigations into the source of these counterfeit banknotes are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
