Brantford Police Service (BPS) has issued a public advisory following multiple reports of counterfeit Canadian currency being used at businesses across the city. Authorities have recorded 11 reports of counterfeit bills since the beginning of February 2025.
The counterfeit money primarily consists of $100 and $50 Canadian bills. Investigators have determined that several of the $100 bills in circulation bear identical serial numbers, suggesting a broader distribution beyond Brantford. The serial numbers linked to these counterfeit $100 bills include GRJ6710018, GRJ6710019, GRJ6710020, GRJ6710021, and GRJ6710022.
A defining characteristic of these fake bills is the presence of a holographic window strip featuring the words “Prop Money.” Additional irregularities include discoloration and peeling of the bill’s surface, exposing unnatural coloration.
Authorities urge businesses and residents to remain vigilant and examine bills closely to identify counterfeit currency. Key features to verify include:
- Unique serial numbers: Each authentic bill should have a distinct serial number. Multiple bills with the same serial number indicate counterfeiting.
- “Prop Money” markings: No legitimate Canadian banknote should bear this label.
- Quality and durability: Authentic bills have a finish that does not easily scrape off.
- Raised ink: Genuine currency features raised ink in specific areas, providing a distinct tactile feel.
BPS advises individuals who come into possession of suspected counterfeit bills not to accept them and to report the incident to police immediately.
