In a groundbreaking initiative, Grand Erie has partnered with the Toronto Holocaust Museum to offer employees access to a wealth of historical resources, aligning with the Ministry of Education’s expanded curriculum on Holocaust education for grade 6 Social Studies and grade 10 History.

This first-of-its-kind partnership provides participants with the opportunity to engage deeply with immersive exhibits at the museum, fostering reflection and insight into teaching this critical subject. The initiative aims to support not only educators but also system leaders, parents, students, and community members in understanding the Holocaust and its contemporary relevance.

“The collaboration with the Toronto Holocaust Museum leverages Grand Erie’s learning forward by experiencing a cutting-edge immersive experience to understand the Holocaust and promote civic education and dialogue,” said JoAnna Roberto, Director of Education. “Our collective vision was to provide a unique opportunity to all staff and students across the district to make connections, enrich learning experiences, and further assist educators in teaching about the complex history of the Holocaust.”

Participants reported a profound personal and professional impact after engaging with the museum’s resources. According to Carrie Swartz, Director of Museum Experience, working with Grand Erie’s wider community provided a broader perspective on how the learning will be implemented in various contexts.

This partnership is part of Grand Erie’s 2024-25 Annual Learning and Operating Plan and Multi-Year Strategic Plan, which prioritizes equity through professional development on the Holocaust, world events, human rights, and contemporary Canadian issues. By offering district-wide learning opportunities, both in-person and virtual, educators are equipped with tools and wraparound support to effectively deliver this essential curriculum.
