The Brantford-Brant Chamber of Commerce began 2025 in grand fashion on Tuesday evening with its first “Business After Hours” networking event of the year, hosted by the historic Brantford Club.

The event, which drew 80 members of the local business community, offered an evening of light refreshments and networking, setting the tone for what organizers described as a year full of opportunity, collaboration, and growth.

Founded in 1898, The Brantford Club provided an elegant and fitting backdrop for the evening’s gathering, welcoming Chamber members to its long-standing social space. The event was generously sponsored by Waterous Holden Amey Hitchon LLP, a Brantford-based law firm.

John Oddi, the 2025 President of the Brantford-Brant Chamber of Commerce, spoke about the purpose and importance of the evening.

“We’re here to collaborate with one another, talk business, and welcome new members,” he said, noting that this year marks the Chamber’s first effort to incorporate a focused advocacy update into its networking events. “Unity, collaboration, and networking—those are the messages we’re bringing tonight.”

Elizabeth Lorenzin, the newly appointed Chair of the Chamber’s Advocacy Committee, shared a similar sentiment. “It’s an exciting time to be in business,” she said. “And what better way to celebrate than by being among your colleagues? Being here tonight with business leaders who share the same passion is a reminder of the dedication it takes to succeed—it’s not nine to five, it’s almost 24 hours a day.”

The Chamber, which represents approximately 600 members, has ambitious plans for the year.

Oddi highlighted several key issues on the horizon, including potential elections, tariff discussions, and fluctuations in the local real estate market.

“It’s going to be a busy year,” he said. “We’re expecting mortgage rates to come down, which will have a ripple effect, making borrowing more accessible for businesses. It’s going to be a steady year, with some hills and valleys, but we’re going to make progress.”

Lorenzin emphasized the importance of leadership within the Chamber as it navigates the challenges and opportunities of 2025. “We’re fortunate to have someone like John leading us,” she said. “He knows this community inside and out. With his experience and an amazing board, we’ll be ready for whatever comes our way.”

A recurring theme throughout the evening was the value of the Chamber’s collective strength and the opportunities it provides for its members. Oddi underscored the importance of growing the membership base. “The more members we have, the stronger we become,” he said. “It allows us to provide better services, more networking opportunities, and stronger advocacy at both the provincial and national levels. My mission is to grow the membership and enhance opportunities for collaboration—not just within Brantford, but with other Chambers and associations in the region and beyond.”

For Lorenzin, the Chamber also serves as a vital support system for business owners. “Being a business owner can be a lonely experience,” she said. “Events like this bring us together. It’s priceless to be surrounded by like-minded people who understand the challenges and rewards of running a business in 2025. I’m a firm believer that we’re going to do great things this year.”

The atmosphere at The Brantford Club was one of optimism and camaraderie as members mingled, exchanged ideas, and looked ahead to the year to come.

The Chamber’s “Business After Hours” series will continue throughout 2025, providing opportunities for members to connect, collaborate, and strengthen their businesses as part of Brantford’s thriving commercial community.

One of the next events scheduled is the 17th annual MP/MPP Breakfast, taking place on February 28, from 7:30 to 10:00 a.m. at the Marriott TownePlace Suites, 30 Fen Ridge Court, Brantford.
