Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, affectionately known as “The Great One,” has once again found himself in the national spotlight—this time as an unexpected contender for Canada’s top political office.

President-elect Donald Trump revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that he had asked Wayne Gretzky to consider running for Prime Minister of Canada, humorously suggesting the position might soon be known as ‘Governor of Canada.’ Although the hockey icon swiftly dismissed the idea, the proposal has ignited public interest and speculation about a grassroots movement to draft Gretzky into politics.

The idea surfaced after Trump’s statement publicly suggested Gretzky would win office effortlessly and might not even need to campaign. The endorsement, while initially lighthearted, has gained traction online, with fans and political enthusiasts voicing their support through hashtags like #DraftGretzky and #GreatOneForPM.

“Canada needs leadership that inspires unity, and who better than Wayne Gretzky?” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter). “He’s already a national hero!”

Despite the growing buzz, Gretzky himself has shown no interest in trading hockey sticks for political speeches. “I’ve always focused on bringing people together through sports,” he stated in a brief comment. “Politics isn’t my game, but I’m flattered by the sentiment.”

Gretzky’s humility and enduring popularity continue to make him an appealing public figure, prompting some observers to question whether he might reconsider if public demand continues to swell.

Born and raised in Brantford, Ontario, Gretzky’s roots in the city have shaped his identity as a Canadian icon. Brantford, often referred to as the “Birthplace of Wayne Gretzky,” has long celebrated his achievements with landmarks such as the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre and a statue honoring his legacy. Supporters from Brantford have been particularly vocal in the campaign, viewing his candidacy as an opportunity to extend his leadership from the rink to the political arena.

Political analysts have noted that Gretzky’s universal appeal and reputation for leadership on and off the ice could resonate with voters frustrated by traditional politics. “His image as a unifier and achiever makes him a natural candidate,” said political strategist Mark Henderson. “Whether he runs or not, the idea taps into the broader desire for unconventional leaders.”

However, others caution that Gretzky’s lack of political experience could pose challenges. “Running a country isn’t like managing a hockey team,” said political commentator Susan Wright. “Still, it’s an intriguing scenario.”

While Gretzky has firmly stated he has no plans to enter politics, the ‘Draft Wayne Gretzky’ movement may continue to build momentum. Supporters are already organizing petitions and social media campaigns to convince him to reconsider.

Whether the movement turns into a serious political push or remains a playful nod to Gretzky’s status as a national treasure, one thing is clear—the Great One’s influence in Canada remains as strong as ever.
