The Medical Officer of Health for the Brant County Health Unit has issued a cold alert, effective Saturday, December 21, 2024, as temperatures are forecasted to dip below -15°C, excluding wind chill. This severe weather warning highlights the dangers posed by frigid conditions and serves as a call to action for the community to take precautions against cold-related illnesses and injuries.

At temperatures of -15°C or colder, unprotected skin can freeze within 30 minutes, and the risk of hypothermia increases significantly. While the cold poses a threat to everyone, certain groups are particularly vulnerable, including older adults, infants, young children, individuals with chronic health conditions, those experiencing homelessness, people living in inadequately insulated or heated homes, and anyone working or exercising outdoors.

The Brant County Health Unit urges residents to take preventative measures to avoid cold injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia. Recommendations include dressing in multiple layers, covering exposed skin with hats, mittens, and face masks, and consuming warm, non-caffeinated, and non-alcoholic beverages to maintain hydration. Community members are also encouraged to check on elderly or vulnerable individuals to ensure their safety and warmth during the cold snap.

For those in immediate need of shelter, emergency resources are available. SOAR Emergency Intake Services provides 24/7 assistance at 1-888-621-0034. Additional warming spaces have been established in Brantford, including Rosewood House on Nelson Street, the Salvation Army Booth Centre on Dalhousie Street, and SOAR Community Services on Murray Street, which operate with expanded capacity during cold alerts. These locations offer temporary refuge for those seeking shelter from the bitter temperatures.

Residents are urged to seek shelter and to visit Brantford.ca/ExtremeCold for resources, including tips on identifying the signs of frostbite and hypothermia. This cold alert will remain in effect until further notice from the Medical Officer of Health. The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and take every precaution to stay safe as winter’s harshest conditions set in.
