The Grand Erie District School Board is calling on the Haldimand and Brantford communities to submit their best ideas for naming two new elementary schools currently under construction. Both schools are expected to open in the coming years, with one located in Caledonia set to welcome students next September and the other in West Brant, anticipated to open in 2026.
“The name of a school should resonate with and reflect its community and the values, histories, and aspirations that make it unique,” said Susan Gibson, Chair of the Board. “This process aims to engage those communities directly to put their stamp on these new schools and inspire a love of learning for generations to come.”
Grand Erie’s school naming process encourages creativity while considering several key factors. Suggested names could be inspired by local geography, street names, historical events, or individuals who have made outstanding contributions to education. Additionally, submissions should align with Grand Erie’s mission to foster a culture of learning, well-being, and belonging.
Community members have until February 6, 2025, to submit their ideas. The top submissions for each school will be reviewed by School Naming Committees in the respective regions, which will evaluate and recommend their choices. The final recommendations will be presented to the Board of Trustees for approval in late February.
With over 28,000 students across 58 elementary and 14 secondary schools in Brantford, Brant County, Haldimand County, Norfolk County, Six Nations of the Grand River, and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Grand Erie emphasizes community involvement in shaping the educational experience.
