In a joint effort to expand community understanding of Indigenous history and experiences, Wilfrid Laurier University’s Brantford campus and the City of Brantford have announced a free online course open to all, beginning January 2025. Titled Introduction to Indigenous Matters, the course will offer insights into Indigenous perspectives on land, language, identity, and community structure.

The self-directed course, provided through Laurier’s Department of Indigenous Studies, Law and Social Justice, allows participants to learn at their own pace, with an expected completion time of six to eight hours. Bruce McKay, Interim Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, emphasized the importance of accessible education on Indigenous issues, particularly in a region deeply connected to Indigenous history.

“This region has been home to Indigenous peoples since time immemorial,” McKay said. “As Canada continues to confront its historical relationship with Indigenous peoples, many local residents are seeking to deepen their understanding of these realities. We’re pleased to partner with the City to create this opportunity, contributing to the broader work of truth and reconciliation.”

The course explores pre-colonial Indigenous life, early encounters with European settlers, and contemporary challenges facing Indigenous communities. It offers a snapshot of key issues and is part of Brantford’s commitment as a UNESCO Inclusive Municipality to foster respect and inclusion for all communities. The initiative also aligns with the city’s Inclusive Community Plan, which advocates for expanded Indigenous-led educational opportunities.
